Congenial and genial both mean “friendly and pleasant”—referring not only to people, but also to places, events, atmospheres, etc:
A congenial workplace makes for happier workers!
A genial person is usually happy to meet new people.
These words—both adjectives—can be used in all of the same places, with no difference in meaning, except that congenial, with its con- prefix, may have a stronger connotation of “togetherness”:
A congenial host tries to give some attention to every guest.
However, genial could be used in these places also. Congenial is much more commonly used than genial, in general.
