The en dash (–) is narrower than the em dash (—) and wider than a hyphen (-). It has 4 common uses:
1. To show a range of numbers
That store charges $40–50 for a pair of socks!

Pick any number 1–49.
Note that if you introduce a range with words such as between or from, you should not use the en dash.
Incorrect: He served as the President of the Chess Society from 2014–2016.
Correct: He served as the President of the Chess Society from 2014 to 2016.
2. To show a period of time
I studied in Denmark from 2015–2017.
I’ll be in town September 14–19, 2018.
The band is performing October 3–October 7 in London.
3. To show scores
The Cardinals beat the Bears 7–3.
The Senate voted 52-48 to pass the bill.
4. To show a close connection
The America–China trade talks.
The Glass–Steagall Act.
The England–France travel package.
Reminder
Remember not to place a space on either end of the en dash.
Incorrect: Pick a number from 1 – 7.
Correct: Pick a number from 1–7.
