Hew is a verb meaning “to cut,” typically associated with wood or bone, not paper, or food. Hew refers to cutting with an axe or sword, not scissors, or razors. It connotes significant force and strength.
More rarely, hew can have a completely different meaning: “to stay with or follow something,” such as to hew to tradition, or hew to the law. But most often it will mean “cut”:
The workers would hew the rock by hand and then place the pieces into the crusher machine.
It took James two hours to hew down the tree.
The stone was hewn from granite into the shape of a heart by a master craftsman.
Hue is a noun meaning either “a specific color” or “a shade of a basic color”:
The forest contains many hues of green, as well as browns, purples, and other hues.
Laney was upset because her spouse bought the wrong hue of paint for the second time in a row.
